Accommodation | Zambia | Shoebill Island Camp

Shoebill Island Camp lies on the southeastern tip of the Bangweulu wetlands and the camp here offers Africa's best viewing of the Shoebill Stork. The best time of year to watch these prehistoric birds is April to July but they can still usually be found later on. There is plenty of other birdlife in the swamps, woodlands and floodplains to keep experts and beginners busy!

The game is headed up by the Black Lechwe which is endemic to the area. These occur in herds stretching from horizon to horizon and the latest count estimated them at over 100,000 within a small area of immensely rich floodplain and swamp. Other common mammals are tsessebe, Oribi, bushbuck, buffalo, side-striped jackal, civet and you may be lucky to see elephant,
hyena, sitatunga and reedbuck.

Activities depend somewhat on the water levels. Earlier in the season most viewing is done from boats then as the water dries up game drives and walks become possible. Accommodation is in safari tents under thatch and also reed huts, each with ensuite bathrooms. Maximum capacity is 12 clients.
