Accommodation | Zambia | Mwamba Camp

Mwamba Camp is deep inside the park far from the busy Mfuwe area. This section of the park is bound by national park on both sides of the river. The sheer abundance of game around these two camps is testament to the lack of human interference.

Their privileged location affords undisturbed gameviewing in the beautiful and diverse habitats of the wild Luangwa Valley. The immediate area supports abundant antelope, two lion prides, numerous leopard and impressive herds of elephant, buffalo, hippo and over 300 bird species.

There are very few operators this far inside the park. If you find a lion kill or leopards mating it is most likely that it will be your car alone on the sighting.

At Mwamba Bush Camp, you are provided an opportunity for those of a more adventurous spirit to explore the parks heartland. Wonderfully remote and peaceful, the site is a relaxed 3-hour bushwalk from Kaingo (or 20 minute driving transfer).

Set on the banks of the Mwamba River, a tributary of the Luangwa, the camp enjoys shady views of perennial water-holes.  The chalets are uniquely designed with two large skylights (protected by mosquito gauze) allowing you to experience sleeping under the stars.

These three reed and thatch en-suite bungalows also have solar lighting, flush toilets and hot showers. The accommodation reflects a thoughtful balance between back-to-nature simplicity and essential comforts.  Meals are of the same high standard as Kaingo, and the bush-style dining/bar area or "chitenge" is set under the deep shade of huge ebony trees.

A spectacular sunset viewing-point on top of a large termite mound and a glowing campfire under the stars completes the camp's friendly and personal atmosphere.

The game around Mwamba is excellent; large herds of buffalo, eland and Cookson's wildebeeste are followed by the "Mwamba pride", which consists of six beautiful lionesses and two classically dar- maned males. Good leopard sightings are also common due to the large numbers of impala and puku in the area.  Elephants use the Mwamba's waterholes regularly and there is a large bull which frequents the camp. Another appeal of Mwamba is the surrounding terrain.

The Cookson's wildebeest are a subspecies of the Blue Wildebeeste and are only found in the Luangwa Valley. There are very few herds left. We have a very productive herd in Mwamba's walking area and this is one of the only places you are likely to see these beautiful Wildebeeste

Derek Shenton, Ian Salisbury, Alec Cole, and Patrick Njobvu make up an outstanding team of guides. They are able to combine their skills and intimate knowledge of the area to provide exciting and thought provoking safari walks and game-drives.  Derek runs the camps with his wife Jules who takes care of the organisational side of the business.

Our photographic hides of Derek's own design are a special feature of both Kaingo and Mwambo Camps. These hides are guaranteed to get you close enough to the wildlife to take a while host of stunning photos in complete safety.

Our hides have certainly turned the heads of the professionals. In the past year we have been visited by world renowned wildlife photographer Frans Lanting (twice) of National Geographic, Own Prumm of Discovery Channel, David Rogers of Africa Geographic, Lyn Johnsson of National Geographic and Independent film maker Peter Lamberti (Valley of the Golden Baboon). In previous years the BBC have used our hippo hide in the filming of the Wild Africa Series.
