Accommodation | Zambia | Songwe Lodge

This lodge is being rebuilt after a devastating fire in 2008.

Songwe Village was located on 300 acres of private land 5km downstream from the Victoria Falls, one of the 7 natural wonders of the natural world.  The property adjoins the world heritage site and is only 11km (7 miles) from the Victoria Falls.  Songwe Village was on the Zambian side of the Zambezi River and perched 300 feet above the deeply incised and rugged Batoka gorge.

Songwe Village was  developed with the support and assistance of Senior Chief Mukuni of the nearby Mukuni village.  This 700-year-old village is home to the Tokoleya people, who have a long history in the area, and for whom the Falls are a sacred and essential element in their culture.  Just like these people, the Victoria Falls forms an integral part of the Songwe Village experience.

Songwe Village was  built to resemble a traditional village and the atmosphere is just as peaceful, calm and relaxed as the local villages time slows down to African time and so will you.  Songwe had 8 guest huts in an oval pattern, each named after past chiefs of the Mukuni people. Our staff did ensure that you enjoyed all that the Falls has to offer, in their personal style.

Songwe Village guaranteed that you did enjoy your stay.  Having chosen Songwe Village as your base from which to explore, this exciting destination will enhance your experience of the Victoria Falls.  Livingstone-the local town on the Zambian side of the Falls-is not known as the adventure capital of Africa for nothing.  However, your experience can be one of relaxation and peace, or adrenalin and excitement or even a bit of both.

Your exposure to African culture will be subtle and interesting and tailored to suit your interests- Songwe Village is not a cultural show.  The huts are spacious with tasteful traditional furniture, enhanced by modern comfortable mattresses to ensure a good nights sleep. Each hut has a flush loo, shower and basin en suite.  Extra showers and baths are set on the edge of the Batoka gorge, 110metres above the lower Zambezi River-enabling us to claim that we have the best bathroom views in the world.  Bathing will be a highlight of your stay with us.

Testimonials

The canoe trip was BY FAR the most amazing part of our trip!!!! It exceeded our expectations and we had a wonderful time. This is something that we will definitely remember for the rest of our lives. The scenery was beautiful and we felt that we were able to see a part of the “real Africa. Camping out under the stars—hearing the animals in the distance—was out of this world. We’ve made a pact to return for our 40th birthdays in about 15 years so hopefully we will be able to travel with your company again! Thank you so much for all of your assistance. If you ever need a reference, just let me know
